Certificates

The German Association for Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology (GMDS) e.V. awards the certificates "Medical Informatics", "Biometry in Medicine", "Epidemiology" and "Medical Documentation" together with respective partner associations. The partner associations here for the respective certificate are the German Association for Medical Informatics (GI), the German Association for Medical Informatics (BVMI) e.V., the German Association for Epidemiology (DGEpi), the International Biometric Association - German Region (IBG-DR), the German Association for Social Medicine and Prevention (DGSMP) and the German Association for Documentation and Information Management in Medicine (DVMD).

Qualifications

The three certificates "Medical Informatics", "Biometry in Medicine" and "Epidemiology" each certify the holder's qualification for responsible positions in the professional field of the certificate with regard to an academic education, a professional further education and training as well as a practical activity of at least 5 years.

They prove that the holder has a profound theoretical background and sufficient medical knowledge to be able to apply his or her methodological knowledge appropriately. They also prove that the holder has sufficient experience to use his/her knowledge responsibly within the given legal, ethical and regulatory framework.

The certificate "Medical Documentation" certifies the holder's basic theoretical and practical knowledge in many areas of medical documentation (e.g. clinical documentation, clinical research, information processing, etc.). Like the other certificates, this certificate ensures competent and comprehensive further training and assessment of the certificate applicants.

Responsible positions are specified as follows for the three certificates "Biometry in Medicine", "Medical Informatics" and "Epidemiology":

  • The certificate "Biometrics in Medicine" is recognised by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) and by the European Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products (EMA). It certifies the holder's qualification with regard to the function of a responsible biometrician in ("qualified statistician") a clinical trial according to ICH guidelines.
  • The certificate "Medical Informatics" is based on the recommendations of the IMIA (International Medical Informatics Association) for education and training in medical informatics ("Recommendations on Education in Health and Medical Informatics" (Methods Inf Med. 2010 Jan 7; 49(2):105-120)). It certifies the holder's qualification with regard to leading positions in medical informatics.
  • The certificate "Epidemiology" certifies the holder's qualification for management tasks in the field of epidemiology, in particular also for the management of epidemiological studies.

Historical Remarks

  • The "Medical Informatics" certificate has existed since 1978, when it was awarded jointly by the GMDS and the Gesellschaft für Informatik (GI). In 2013, the Professional Association of Medical Informatics (BVMI) became the third sponsoring organisation.
  • The certificate "Medical Biometry", jointly awarded by the GMDS and the German Region of the International Biometric Society (IBG), has existed since 1982.
  • Since 1993, the certificate "Epidemiology" has been awarded jointly by the DAE, GMDS, DGSMP and Biometric Association.
  • With the dissolution of the DAE and the re-foundation of the DGEpi in 2005, the DGEpi is co-editor of the certificate. The certificate "Medical Documentation" has been awarded by the GMDS and the German Association for Documentation and Information Management in Medicine (DVMD) since 2000.
