GMDS Annual Report 2025

Project Group
Global Health Informatics (GHI)

Dr. Fleur Fritz-Kebede, Heidelberg (Lead)
Uwe Wahser, Sandhausen (Lead)

Activities from January, 1st 2025 to December, 31st 2025

Throughout the year 2025, group members have reached out to other member organisations of the IMIA and related Health Informatics Associations to discuss potential synergies, such as the GHI group of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA), the Pan-African Health Informatics Association (HELINA) and the Asia eHealth Information Network (AeHIN) and several national level associations. The group organized and contributed to a number of activities to support this aim:

  • The annual workshop of the GHI group was organized as a hybrid event during the GMDS 2025 conference in Jena. (2025-09-10)
  • At the EFMI Special Topic Conference 2025 in GMDS conference workshops/presentations, e.g. Osnabrück , the groups organized a hybrid workshop on “Joining Forces from Global Interoperability Labs to Enhance and Evaluate Interoperability of Open-Source Products” which brought together Interoperability Labs worldwide, e.g. from the Philippines, Kenya and Germany. (2025-10-23)

Throughout the year, the group engaged in building stronger working relations with the WHO Department of Data, Digital Health, Analytics and Artificial Intelligence:

  • On March 28th, 2025, a webinar was organized with the WHO team to discuss WHO's Digital Health Initiatives and Opportunities for a collaboration with GMDS.
  • Dr. Alain Labrique, the Director of the department at WHO kindly agreed to deliver a keynote speech at the 2025 MII Symposium in Jena.
  • Since early 2025, the group engages with the GMDS chair to elaborate options to apply for a GMDS membership in the WHO Global Initiative on Digital Health, which would increase the international visibility of GMDS and facilitate co-operations.

Members of the project group also participated in a number of international conferences to explore the interest and relevance of an international collaboration with GMDS and to discuss common health informatics topics:

The core team of the project group with three members met biweekly in a videocall to discuss and plan group activities.
